Are Twins Common After Tubal Reversal? No!
One of the many questions we get from patients is, “Are twins more common after tubal reversal surgery?”

Tubal reversal restores your natural ability to conceive. For some women tubal reversal helps them correct symptoms or side-effects they have experienced after tubal ligation surgery.
Tubal reversal surgery does nothing to increase the chance of twins….the tubes are rejoined, this allows sperm and egg to meet (fertilize the egg), and allows the pregnancy a chance to travel and attach to the uterine lining.
How do twins happen? Two eggs or an early split?
Twins happen when the ovary releases two eggs at once (nonidentical twins)….or when a fertilized egg divides and splits into two separate cells (identical twins).
Unfortunately many men think they have something to do with twins….sorry guys you don’t! If you release 200 million sperm…..releasing 200 million +1 sperm does nothing to increase the chance of twins.
The chance of having natural (natural means without using fertility medication) twins is about 1 out of every 250 pregnancies.
If you have in-vitro fertilization (IVF) the chance of twins is greatly increased and the chance could be as high as 1 out of every 6 IVF pregnancies!
Many people express a desire to have twins…but twins pregnancy are considered high risk. If you have high order multiples (triplets) or more then the pregnancy is considered very high risk. High order multiples are more common with IVF pregnancies.
Are twins more common after tubal reversal? Maybe?
Twins may be slightly more common after tubal reversal….but only because many tubal reversal mothers are slightly older than the average general pregnancy population.
The average age of most tubal reversal patients is 36.
Women between the ages of 35 to 40 are 4 times more likely to have twins than women under the age of 20. Woman who have tubal reversal are slightly older and because of age alone are slightly more likely to have twins than younger women who do not have tubal reversal.
Many tubal reversal patients have irregular periods and may need treatment with Clomid encourage the ovaries to release eggs and regulate periods. Taking Clomid medication slightly increases the chance of twins to about 5%.
