Pregnancy is not generally recommended after having an endometrial ablation procedure because each pregnancy is considered to be at more risk. The risks are increased for both mom and baby. What is endometrial ablation?
Endometrial ablation is a procedure that involves damaging or destroying the lining of the uterus. The purpose of this treatment is to decrease or stop menstrual periods. The uterine lining is important in supporting an early pregnancy and providing nutrition to the developing pregnancy. After having an endometrial ablation the uterine lining may not be able to succesfull support pregnancy.
Pregnancies after ablation are at more risk of miscarriage, still birth, growth restriction, and requiring a cesarean for delivery. Although each pregnancy is at more risk, existing medical studies suggest most pregnancies conceived after ablation will be normal and healthy.
Can Endometrial Ablation Be Reversed?
Pregnancy is possible after ablation of the uterine lining but the effects of endometrial ablation cannot be reversed. There are currently no medical treatments that can restore or rejuvenate a damaged uterine lining. Most endometrial ablations are not 100% successful in destroying the entire uterine lining and if enough lining remains then pregnancy is possible with tubal ligation reversal after endometrial ablation.
