Madrid Spain: Traveling for best reversal surgery
Meet Elsa. Elsa is 42 years of age and is a Spaniard who lives in Madrid, Spain. She is the mother of two children ages 13 and 10. She had a tubal ligation 10 years before seeking reversal. She works as an artist and specializes in painting. Elsa is married to a resident of Nepal who was unable to travel with her to the United States because of visa restrictions. Instead Elsa was able to travel with her very good friend Rocio for reversal surgery. Rocio chose not to be photographed.

Elsa chose to come to A Personal Choice for reversing tubes for several reasons. She knew she was going to have the best reversal care possible because her friend had also traveled to us (when we were known as Chapel Hill Tubal Reversal Center) and had a successful reversing of her tubes. Elsa knew from first hand experience she would have the best reversal experience possible.
Elsa also came to our center because tubal reversal is difficult to obtain in Europe. Similar to the United States, it is difficult to find an experienced, affordable tubal reversal doctor in Europe. Many European patients will choose between in vitro fertilization in Europe or traveling to the United States for tubal reversal surgery.
How did Elsa’s surgery go?
Elsa’s surgery went great. She did not have any significant scar tissue from her previous surgeries and her tubes and ovaries were in excellent shape. The estimated blood loss was minimal and her fallopian tube lengths after reversing tubes were 8cm on each side. She did well after her surgery. The day after her surgery she rated her pain a 3 on a scale of 1 to 10.
Her plans are to stay in Raleigh for an additional 24 hours and then make the return trip to Spain with Rocio.
When can you get pregnant after tubal reversal?
Elsa’s most important question was the same as most of our other patient’s most important question, “When can she start attempting to become pregnant again?”
We advised Elsa as we do all of our patients and recommend she can start tying to become pregnant after reversal as soon as they feel comfortable. Our evidence does not show an increased risk of ectopic pregnancy or pregnancy complications if patients become pregnant soon after tubal reversal surgery.
