Tubal ligation reversal surgery is the specialty of A Personal Choice.
Our patients travel to us from across the United States and from around the world to have surgery at our reversal center.
One such patient is Caroline who traveled from Scotland to have her tubes reversed.
Caroline decided she wanted to put her fallopian tubes in the best of hands and she made a trip across the Atlantic Ocean to have surgery with the most qualified tubal reversal surgeons in the world.
The following is a story about Caroline who traveled from Scotland to have a reversal of her tubal clips.
Tubal Clipping: Tubal Clamps That Prevent Pregnancy
Caroline had a tubal clipping procedure by having tubal clamps placed across her tubes to prevent pregnancy. She is 40 years-old and is the mother of two children. She lives in Scotland and works as a Personal Assistant in a financial services company.
After the birth of her second child and when she was in her thirties, she underwent a Filshie clip tubal ligation (sometimes referred to a tubal clamps). She is in a new relationship and her current partner does not have any children.
Caroline now seeks removal of tubal clips and a baby with her new husband.
IVF or Tubal Reversal: Which Is Best?
Caroline initially asked herself should she have IVF or tubal reversal. She seriously considered IVF in Scotland.
She did some preliminary investigation and discovered a single cycle of IVF in Scotland cost 4,000 pounds (approximately $6,000 US dollars) and tubal reversal in Scotland would have cost much more. When she explored tubal reversal surgery options in Scotland her doctors were not very enthusiastic about her having reversal surgery in Europe. She was informed her reversal incision would be from ‘hip-to-hip’, she would have to stay in the hospital for several days, and be out of work for six weeks!
Caroline thought tubal reversal was a better choice for her than IVF. In her words, “We did not want to pay £4000 for a single roll of the dice!”
She felt it was better for her to have her tubal reversal surgery at a tubal reversal specialty center. Even with the cost of international travel, Caroline felt tubal reversal in the United States was the best choice for her… better than IVF or better than hip-to-hip tubal reversal in Scotland.
Tubal Reversal In America
Caroline traveled for tubal reversal in the United States from Scotland accompanied by her mother-in-law. Since she was traveling internationally, Caroline choose to have her surgery on a Monday.
This allowed her to arrive in Chapel Hill on Sunday and have her tubal reversal consultation with Dr. Monteith and her tubal reversal surgery both in the same day.
Time Since Tubal Ligation: Not Critical
Caroline was concerned about the amount of time since her tubal ligation; however, Caroline’s tubal reversal surgery was a great success. Her surgery lasted for 50 minutes and her tubal lengths were 7.5 and 10 cm after removal of her tubal clips. The estimated blood loss for the entire surgery was 20 milliliters (four teaspoons).
Caroline did well in the recovery room. She was informed of her reversal surgery results and was then discharged to a local hotel to rest. A staff member evaluated her the day after surgery and she was doing well. Caroline subsequently returned to Scotland to start on her journey of conception. Caroline has reported to us she is doing well at home and is back at work. She will be getting married and will be eagerly planning her honeymoon.
Chances of Getting Pregnant After Tubal Reversal
Caroline has a good chances of becoming pregnant after tubal reversal.
Our pregnancy statistics demonstrate she has a 31% chance of becoming pregnant after sterilization reversal at the age of 40. In comparison, her chances of pregnancy with IVF at age 43 would be approximately 10% (using non-donor eggs) for each cycle of IVF she underwent.
