The majority of our patients come to our center for tubal reversal from across the United States. Our international patients come from Canada, United Kingdom, Central America, the Middle East, and Africa.
Recently we had the pleasure assisting Grazia and her partner, Ronald, with tubal ligation reversal. They traveled to us from Honduras for reversal surgery. We asked them if they would share their story with our Tubal Reversal Blog readers and they agreed.
Tubaligation: Tubes Burned
Grazia and Ronald do not have any children. They have been married for ten years. They decided they were happy together without children and three years ago Grazia decided to have a tubaligation (more commonly known as a tubal ligation).
At the age of 31 Grazia had her tubes burned (medically referred to as tubal coagulation). She was content with this procedure and the consequences of having her tubes burned. Gradually things began to change for Grazia and Ronald.
Pregnancy After Burned Tubes
The sterilization procedure began to have a significant influence upon Grazia and Ronald and they slowly began to change their minds about having children. Three years after having her tubes burned, Grazia began to look into her pregnancy options. She considered both tubal reversal and in-vitro fertilization (IVF).
Tubal Reversal in Honduras?
She looked into tubal reversal surgery in Honduras and decided to pursue IVF in Honduras. A cycle of IVF in Honduras would cost them $6,000 (in the US the average cost is between $9,000-12,000) but the cost would have been higher for tubal reversal in her country.
They decided to attempt a cycle of IVF. Grazia underwent egg retrieval. Things went well and two healthy, growing embryos were placed into her uterus. The embryos did not attach and she did not become pregnant.
Overall they were not happy with their IVF experience and with their doctor and in Honduras. They then decided to try tubal reversal in the United States.
Reversal of Burned Tubes In Chapel Hill
This allowed them to arrive in Chapel Hill the day before and have her consultation with Dr. Monteith and her burned tube reversal the same day. After her reversal surgery, the couple was planning to travel to Florida and recover from surgery with close friend of theirs.
Can Burned Tubes be Reversed?
Burned tubes can be reversed. Her tubal reversal surgery lasted 74 minutes and her tubal lengths were 5.5 cm and 6.0 cm. Based on our pregnancy statistics on tubal length, Grazia had a 70% chance of becoming pregnant after her burned tube reversal.
The estimated blood loss was 75 milliliters (5 tablespoons) during her surgery. She did well in the recovery room and was discharged to the hotel.
Grazia was visited by our nursing staff the day after her tubal reversal and she reported her pain a 1 on a 10 point scale (10 being a high level of pain). She left the hotel and traveled to Florida where she and Ronald stayed with friends.
