Is it possible to get pregnant after a tubal ligation?
This question was asked by two recent tubal ligation reversal patients who came to A Personal Choice in March of 2010. Sandy, Tammy, and their partners came for reversal of their tubal ligation.
The day they arrived for tubal reversal was also the day reporters from a leading triangle medical magazine were at our reversal facility to document the innovative surgical techniques which have allowed many women to get pregnant after a tubal ligation procedure.
We previously reported on this tubal reversal article featuring Dr. Berger and his reversal center and a condensed version of the magazine article can be viewed: Berger Babies and Database Are Proof Tubes Can Be Untied .
On this day both the reporters and the patients were wanting to know if it is possible to get pregnant after a tubal ligation reversal.
Can you get pregnant after a tubal ligation?
Many women will make the decision to have a tubal ligation procedure. Many will also regret this decision, which they are frequently told is permanent and irreversible. Some women will accept this answer but others will not.
Two women who did not accept this answer were Tammy and Sandy. The both looked into the alternative options of becoming pregnant: tubal ligation reversal or IVF.
After researching their chances of becoming pregnant after ligation reversal and chances of become pregnant with IVF, they each made the decision to have reversal of their tubal ligations.
Tubal reversal New York
Sandy and her husband Brian traveled from New York for tubal ligation reversal. Sandy is 31 years of age and she had a ligation and resection (cut and tied) type of tubal ligation during a c-section.
Sandy was referred to Dr. Gary Berger by her local doctor in New York.

Sandy’s tubal ligation reversal surgery went well. She had a moderate amount of adhesions (scar tissue) from previous surgery. Despite having scar tissue, she was able to have both her tubes repaired and her tubal lengths after repair were 5 and 4 cm respectively. The surgery took 81 minutes and her estimated blood loss was 30 ml (6 teaspoons). She did well in the recovery room and was discharged to a local hotel for her recovery.
The day after her surgery she was visited by a Tubal Reversal Nurse and Sandy reported her pain a 3 on a 1 to 10 scale. Following the nurse’s visit, Sandy and her husband returned home to New York.
Tubal reversal Wisconsin
Tammy and her husband Gary traveled from Wisconsin for her tubal ligation reversal. Tammy is 35 years of age and she had a postpartum ligation and resection (cut and tied) type of tubal ligation. Tammy’s doctor performed an unusual variation of tying tubes during her tubal ligation. Her tubal ligation was actually the Uchida method of tubal ligation.
During the Uchida procedure the doctor ties and cuts the tube. One end of the tube is then buried underneath tissue lying next to the uterus as an additional step to prevent pregnancy. This is a very uncommon type of tubal ligation and has been reported to be one of the most effective forms of tying tubes. Tammy was referred by a friend and previous tubal reversal patient. Tammy had her reversal surgery with Dr. Monteith.
Tubal ligation reversal Wisconsin patient
Tammy’s Uchida tubal ligation was reversed. Her tubal lengths were each 7.5 cm, her surgery lasted 49 minutes, and the estimated blood loss was 15 ml (3 teaspoons). She did well after the surgery, was discharged to the local hotel for an overnight stay, and the next day she was seen by a member of our nursing staff. Tammy reported her pain score to be a 2 on a 1 to 10 scale. After her tubal ligation, she returned home to Wisconsin.
Can I get pregnant with tubal ligation?
Both Sandy and Tammy have asked if they can they get pregnant after a tubal ligation? After researching the pregnancy statistics found on our tubal ligation reversal website and deciding between their chances with IVF and tubal reversal, they both choose to come to A Personal Choice to have their ‘permanent’ and ‘irreversible’ decisions reversed.
It has only been six months since their reversal procedures. One patient has received her true answer to her question and the other is patiently awaiting her answer. In our next tubal reversal blog article, Can You Get Pregnant After Tubal Ligation Reversal Surgery?, we reveal which patient has gotten a quick answer to the question, “Can I get pregnant after a tubal ligation?”.
