Essure is a newer method of ‘tubal ligation’.
Despite being a newer method of permanent birth control, some women seem to experience side-effects from Essure similar to older methods of tubal ligation.
Most women who have the Essure procedure will be happy and will not have any problems. Some will experience regret and sometimes even pain.
These women will often wonder if Essure removal or Essure reversal are possible and will these procedures provide relief from the side-effects.
Essure Reversal: Is It Possible?
As many as one out of five women will experience regret after a tubal sterilization procedure.
Regret after Essure has not officially been studied; however, there is little reason to think regret after Essure is any different than regret after other forms of sterilization.
Most women who regret a sterilization procedure do so because of the desire to have more children and many women who contact A Personal Choice will inquire about the possibility of pregnancy after Essure reversal.
Is Essure Reversible? Can Pregnancy Happen?
Pregnancy is possible after Essure reversal. Essure is reversed at our facility by a tubouterine implantation procedure.
A small incision is made above the pubic bone, the Essure coils are removed, and the remaining healthy tubes are inserted into a newly created opening which by-passes the previous Essure blockage.
This is an out-patient surgery at our facility, surgery lasts about 90 minutes, and the chances of pregnancy after Essure reversal are 30-50%.
This is comparable to, if not higher than, the alternative treatment of in-vitro fertilization, which has an average success rate of 35% for each IVF cycle.
Essure Removal For Essure Problems
Essure removal is often requested by patients who report side-effects after an Essure procedure.
These patients are frequently told they would need a hysterectomy to treat problems they are experiencing.
Essure removal is also done at A Personal Choice as a one hour, out-patient surgery.
A small incision is made just above the pubic bone and the coils are removed in their entirety. The tubes are not implanted into the uterine cavity so pregnancy will not occur and birth control after surgery is not necessary.
Most patients report improvement in their symptoms after removal surgery.
