Essure Tubal Ligation Reversal – What You Need To Know

essure-coils-can-be-removed-and-pregnancy-may-occurEssure reversal is possible at A Personal Choice.  Our surgical facility is a tubal surgery center exclusively dedicated to reversal of tubal sterilization and correction of tubal blockage.

We have performed over 7,000 tubal reversal procedures.  Recently, we have begun to experience an increasing number of inquires regarding Essure sterilization , Essure reversal, and Essure removal.

Essure Sterilization Reversal: What is Essure?

Essure sterilization is a new tubal occlusion technology that has been approved for use in the United States since November 2002.

essure-causes-tubal-blockage-which-can-be-bypassedThe procedure causes the tubes to heal closed in the isthmic portion of the tube. This is the narrowest portion of the fallopian tube as the tube travels through the wall of the uterus. During the procedure, the physician uses a small camera to insert a metal coil through the cavity of the uterus and into the opening of each tube.

The coil itself does not block the tube. The tube closes because the insert causes fibrosis (scarring) of the inside of the tube. This procedure is effective at preventing pregnancy and is intended to be permanent; however, it is possible to perform Essure sterilization reversal.

Essure Reversed: Can It Be Done?

Essure sterilization can be reversed. We perform Essure reversals as an out-patient procedure which typically lasts less than 90 minutes.

The healthy portion of each fallopian tube is separated from the uterus. Since part of the metal coil protrudes into the uterine cavity, we remove the both coils from the wall of the uterus to prevent possible complications in future pregnancies.

The uterine cavity is exposed by opening the uterine muscle. The healthy portion of each tube is reinserted into the uterine cavity on both sides of the uterus. This procedure bypasses the scarred portion of the tube and causes the Essure to be reversed.

Pregnancy After Essure Reversal?

We have had extensive experience with tubouterine implantation procedures for reversal of other methods of tubal ligation.  In general, pregnancy rates after tubal ligation reversal are approximately 70%; however, the pregnancy rate with tubouterine implantation is approximately 50%.

We have performed  Essure reversals and Adiana reversals .

Our first Adiana reversal patient quickly became pregnant.  This pregnancy was the first reported, successful pregnancy in a patient who has undergone tubouterine implantation for reversal of Adiana sterilization. Her pregnancy was reported in an Adiana Reversal Pregnancy Testimonial.

Our first successful Essure reversal patient was featured in our Tubal Reversal blog and her successful pregnancy was reported in an Essure Reversal Pregnancy Testimonial.

Pregnancy After Essure Reversal: Our Data

Since our center is dedicated only to tubal surgery, we have  performed more tubal reversal surgeries than any other doctor or surgical facility (over 7,ooo surgeries over the last 15 years).

We-are-an-essure-reversal-centerIn 2009 we published our 2009 Pregnancy Study Report. Using our computerized database, we analyzed over 5,000 procedures performed at our center since 2000.

We identified 23 patients who had tubouterine implantation procedures for tubes damaged in the wall of the uterus from traditional tubal ligations: 19 patients had a tubouterine implantation on one side only and 4 patients had both tubes implanted.

For all of the patients who had tubouterine implantations, the pregnancy rate was approximately 57%. Among the 4 patients who had both tubes implanted, 2 patients became pregnant.

Pain After Essure Procedure

Pain after Essure is not commonly reported. The current medical studies on Essure sterilization do not suggest that women who have the procedure are at increased risk of pain.

We have received reports of pain after Essure which have been submitted to our Tubal Reversal Blog. These reports have been submitted by blog visitors.

Costs of Essure Reversal

tubal-reversal-sign-seen-before-essure-reversalCost of Essure reversal is a common inquiry.

Currently the cost for reversal of Essure is $6900. We have a pre-payment option in which patients can pay towards their Essure reversal over time.

Cost of Essure Removal

Some women experience side-effects after  Essure coils have been inserted and they desire removal of the Essure coils for relief of symptoms.

If you are interested only in removal of the Essure coils, we encourage you to call the office at (919) 968-4656 to inquire about the reduced fee for Essure coil removal.

Some doctors charge more for Essure reversal. We have attempted to keep the cost of Essure reversal low and affordable.

Best Candidate For Essure Reversal?

The best candidate for a Essure reversal procedures is a patient who has not had any additional procedures to their tubes or uterus. We commonly receive request from patients who have had an Essure procedure combined with an additional procedure. The two most common procedures are an additional tubal ligation method or an endometrial ablation.

Occasionally the inserts will either not cause the tubes to close or cause only partial closure. These patients will then have an additional standard tubal ligation to close the open tube, which will cause damage to even more of the tube. Some patients will have endometrial ablations at the time of the Essure procedures.

Pregnancy after reversal in these situations is possible; however, these additional procedures may decrease the pregnancy success rate. Endometrial ablations may increase the risk of miscarriage and other pregnancy complications after a reversal procedure.

Most women who have had the Essure procedure will be candidates for Essure reversal and will have the chance of getting pregnant after Essure reversal.
