Essure Reversal: An Alternative To Invitro Fertilization

An Essure reversal procedure can offer women an alternative to in-vitro fertilization (IVF).

pregnancy can happen after essure sterilizationEssure sterilization has become increasingly popular since it was first approved by the FDA in 2002.

Since 2002 over 600,000 women have undergone Essure sterilization and some of these women have begun to reconsider their decision to not have more children.

Very often these women are told the Essure coils cannot be removed and the the Essure cannot be reversed. They are often told they will need to have IVF to become pregnant.

Our experience at A Personal Choice suggests otherwise. Essure sterilization can be reversed and pregnancy is possible after an Essure reversal procedure.

Can Essure Be Reversed?

Essure coils can easily be removed and the tubes can be reinserted into the uterine cavity through a procedure called a tubouterine implantation procedure.

This surgery is the gold standard for the treatment of proximal tubal occlusion caused by the Essure procedure. The Essure reversal surgery lasts 90 minutes and  is currently performed as an out-patient surgery at A Personal Choice.

Can You Get Pregnant After Essure Reversal?

From 2009 to 2012, we  have performed over 50 Essure reversal procedures. A total of seven Essure reversal pregnancies have been reported. Two of these seven pregnancies ended up in pregnancy miscarriage and the other five have either delivered or are ongoing.

Essure Removal

If you are reading this and are saying, “Hey 7 pregnancies out of 50 women does not sound that great!” then you should also understand that some of these procedures have been for Essure coil removal only. Patients who come to us for coil removal only are doing so because they are having adverse symptoms, want the coils out, but dont want to become pregnant.

Not only have some of these been Essure coil removal only, but some of these Essure reversal patients were over the age of 40 and the ability to become pregnant does decline with age.

We  approach every reversal with the concept we can never predict who will or will not get pregnant. As a result, we only require a patient to be a safe candidate for surgery and have a reasonable chance at becoming pregnant.

Can You Get Pregnant After Essure?

Pregnancy can happen after Essure. We recently had our 7th pregnancy after Essure reversal reported. This pregnancy is in the early stages and the we wish the mother well.
